When you redeem eligible beverage containers, you receive the CRV you paid at the time of purchase. It’s a simple way to reduce waste while earning cash back for doing your part.

When you redeem CRV using beverage containers like aluminum soda cans, plastic juice bottles, and glass bottles from wine, beer, and liquor, you’re not alone. Since the start of the CRV program, Californians have recycled more than 513.5 billion bottles and cans. In 2023, 18.8 billion beverage containers were recycled. That’s more than 400 containers per person.
Not Everything Is Eligible
While many beverage containers qualify for CRV, some recyclable items do not. Common examples include:
Milk and plant-based milk containers
Infant formula containers
Non-beverage glass bottles and jars, such as pasta sauce or pickle jars
Other non-beverage food containers and household packaging
These materials may still be recyclable through your local recycling program (check local rules), but they are not eligible for CRV redemption. Knowing which items qualify helps prevent confusion at recycling sites and reduces contamination in the CRV program.
