Composting food scraps is powerful—it reduces landfill waste, cuts potent methane emissions, and enriches our soil. But let’s be honest, getting started or keeping up with it can feel challenging. CalRecycle has practical solutions to get you started.

You can easily put aside concerns over smells and pests with these simple steps:

  • Contain & Deodorize: Use a small, lidded kitchen bin to collect food scraps. If needed, add baking soda or coffee grounds as natural deodorizers.
  • Freeze the Funk: If a kitchen bin is not for you, consider freezing your food scraps until collection day.
  • Keep It Clean: Layer food scraps in your kitchen bin with used paper towels or napkins to absorb moisture. Empty your kitchen bin regularly and wash it with soap and water. Keep it clean, keep it fresh!
