Creating a cleaner, healthier California starts with everyday actions, and young leaders across the state are showing how simple those actions can be.

Through the CalRecycle Student Social Media Ambassador Program (SSMAP), future leaders are using their voices to share practical tips, inspire action, and help Californians recycle smarter and waste less.

Isaiah Patrie is a student and an at-home composting expert. He’s using his voice to share why separating food scraps matters, and how to get started at home.

You can learn a lot from his Instagram reels (@isaiahpastry), including beginner-friendly composting tips:

Two key takeaways from Isaiah’s video are:

  • Compost with purpose: Food scraps don’t have to go to waste. When properly sorted into the green bin, they can become compost to make nutrient-rich soil, reduce landfill waste, and cut landfill methane pollution.
  • Share what you learn: Small actions grow when shared. Encouraging friends, family, and neighbors to adopt composting habits makes a big impact across the community.

Together, these student voices show that meaningful change doesn’t have to be complicated. It starts with simple, everyday choices at home.
